Biobased Composites

Process

As a starting point for bio-based materials, research was carried out into the possibilities of combining coffee grounds and wood shavings.

Why these two materials ?
Coffee grounds and wood chips are two quite accessible sources of biological and natural production waste that we encounter almost daily in our everyday lives. In addition, the combination of both results in a very pleasant and natural looking haptic, which is reminiscent of wood composites and is therefore ideally suited for furniture design. Starch, gelatine, algae extract and olive extract are used as binders and brewer’s yeast is also being experimented with, as it has a simple cell structure and forms a useful protein base.
